Henk Lategan makes his debut in the Dakar and Carlos Sainz loses another hour for the shock absorber of his Audi

The Dakar Rally has great new promise. South African Henk Lategan has won the fifth stage of 2022 to confirm himself as what he had already appeared in the rest of the Dakar: a rider who will have to be taken into account in the coming seasons. The pearl of Toyota has shone more than ever in Riyadh.

27-year-old South African Lategan races the same Toyota Hilux 4×4 as Nasser Al-Attiyah, the leader of the general and had already grazed the machado in previous stages. But it has been in Riyadh where he has taken advantage of some confusion among the favorites to take a victory that confirms him as a young man to follow closely.

Peterhansel stopped to give his shock absorber to Carlos Sainz

Roma Dakar 2022

If Lategan is the face of the stage, the cross is again Audi. Everything is happening to the German brand in its first hybrid Dakar. This time it has been Carlos Sainz who has had to stop due to shock absorber problemsAlthough luckily Stéphane Peterhansel has turned up to be ‘Monsieur Dakar’ once again.

Sainz had to stop in the middle of the stage, but Peterhansel came from behind and borrowed the shock absorber from his Audi, he was thrown for the third time in what we took from Dakar. An honorable gesture by the French to the top-ranked Audi that has allowed Sainz to lose only one hour at the finish line.

Al Attiyah Dakar 2022

In the fight for victory, Sébastien Loeb has made a small cut taking advantage of Al-Attiyah’s first more or less serious oversight in everything we have rallyed. Loeb was second on the stage, 1:58 behind Lategan, while the Qatari Toyota reached the finish line at 4:53. Tomorrow he will have a good starting position.

Even so, Al-Attiyah’s lead remains very strong. They are 35:10 minutes that the Qatari can manage without worrying more than necessary about Loeb. In addition, he finished eighth on today’s stage, so on Friday he will be able to attack unceremoniously and in a very favorable position. Dakar controlled for him.

Ekstrom Dakar 2022

Nani Roma, who was able to continue in the race after the ordeal of the previous stage, has finished at 9:44 of Lategan. The Catalan already explained that in the remainder of the rally he would dedicate himself to supporting Loeb and Orlando Terranova so that they could achieve the best possible result for the Prodrive team, which still dreams of victory.

Another injured party was Giniel de Villiers, but not because of today’s stage. He finished seventh, just 4:29 behind the winner, but accumulates a five-hour penalty for another incident you have suffered with a motorcycle which he did not help. And it is that 2022 is not being the cleanest Dakar for de Villiers.
