For the first time since 2018: China’s car market grew thanks to electric cars in 2021

China’s auto market has grown again for the first time since 2018. Thanks to the strong demand for alternative drives, the number of vehicles sold climbed by 4.5 percent to around 20.5 million in 2021, according to the industry association PCA (China Passenger Car Association). Sales of e- and hybrid cars grew by almost 170 percent to around three million in 2021, with purely battery-powered vehicles making up the clear majority.

The association now expects an even greater surge in demand for electric vehicles and has raised its forecasts for 2022 to more than 5.5 million units. So far, the expectation was 4.8 million vehicles with alternative drives.

This increases the importance of China, especially for e-car manufacturers. US manufacturer Tesla, for example, which has also been producing in the country for two years, has had a successful year in China. The world’s largest vehicle market is also immensely important for German manufacturers. However, the Chinese car market has been suffering from the global chip shortage for several months. Suppliers such as Volkswagen and Daimler are therefore creating a decline in sales. Wolfsburg in particular suffered significant losses in China.

Sales weakness at the end of the year

According to the association, the stresses caused by the lack of chips and the scarcity of raw materials are now decreasing. Nevertheless, sales of all manufacturers and all drive types combined in China fell again at the end of 2021 – the PCA reported a decline of 7.7 percent for December. In its survey, the PCA measures sales of cars, SUVs, minivans and smaller commercial vehicles. (dpa-AFX / gem)
