Giniel de Villiers leads a Toyota triplet that leaves the Dakar very on track for Nasser Al-Attiyah

During moments of the ninth stage of the Dakar it seemed that the final victory was going to complicate even more to Nasser Al-Attiyah, Nothing could be further from the truth. The Qatari from Toyota did the rest in the second part of the stage to finish in third position and increase the gap with Sébastien Loeb by one more minute.

Al-Attiyah has completed a great Toyota party. If on Monday Audi touched the treble, on Tuesday the Japanese brand has achieved it: stage win for Giniel de Villiers, second place for the young Henk Lategan and closes the podium an Al-Attiyah that with each passing day looks more like a champion.

Lategan lacked nine seconds to win his second stage

Peterhansel Dakar 2022

De Villiers, the 2009 Dakar winner, thus achieves his 18th stage win and meet your annual appointment with victory. The pity for the South African is that he is too late for the fight for the podium, since last Sunday he suffered an accident that made him lose more than an hour, and all the options of the drawer.

In certain sections of the stage it was Loeb who had been cutting times with Al-Attiyah, but it seems that the Frenchman from Prodrive has again had problems in his car and has reached the finish line at 2:11 of de Villiers. Al-Attiyah has stayed at only 1:04 of his companion, while Lategan lacked nine seconds to win the stage.

Roma Dakar 2022

In general, another stage with very little navigation and a lot of full throttle of which, unfortunately, are abundant in this Dakar, and that deprive the race of much emotion. Behind the Toyota has gotten the first Audi, that of Mattias Ekström, the winner of Monday’s stage, who continues to complete a great Dakar.

The two Audi star drivers have not been competing for victory, although they have not been far behind either. Carlos Sainz was sixth at 2:48 behind de Villiers while Stéphane Peterhansel finished as eighth best of the day, at 3:45. Minimum distances for a nondescript stage.

Lategan Dakar 2022

The Argentinian Lucio Álvarez has fortunately been able to return to the race after the debacle on Monday, but he has lost almost all options to be on the podium. It seems that the third rung of the drawer will go to Yazeed Al-Rajhi, who today has lost a little to Orlando Terranova but has greatly increased the distance with his closest rival, Jakub Przygonski.

Another that has been able to complete finally a stage without too many surprises is Nani Roma, tenth at 4:19 from the winner. The Spaniard is taking away most of Prodrive’s troubles in this edition of the Dakar, but remains in the race in hopes of at least one victory in the three remaining stages.
