See very large and increasing demand: VW Commercial Vehicles optimistic after falling sales

Volkswagen commercial vehicles delivered around 359,500 new cars in 2021. That was 3.2 percent less than in 2020. The Volkswagen brand announced: “The year 2021 was again strongly shaped at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWN) by the corona pandemic and the resulting challenges on the global semiconductor market, among other things.”

Lars Krause, Brand Board Member for Sales and Marketing, gives hope for 2022: “While we were able to maintain the level of deliveries of the previous year, we see a very large and increasing demand for our vehicles.” In the past year alone, incoming orders have risen by almost 20 percent compared to the previous year.

The T-series remained the brand’s best-selling vehicle: deliveries of vehicles from the T-series rose by 14.8 percent to 166,400 vehicles in 2021. There was particularly strong demand for California 6.1 camping vehicles in 2021. Deliveries here increased by 20.2 percent to 19,300. The seventh generation of the Bullis, the new Multivan, was presented in 2021 and delivered to the first dealers in the fourth quarter. At the end of the year there were 13,500 orders on the books.

Amarok returns

The new Caddy was particularly hard hit by the “challenging situation on the semiconductor market”, according to VWN. Deliveries fell by 24.5 percent to 85,200 units. In contrast, incoming orders for the new Caddy rose by 21.3 percent year-on-year.

The Amarok, which is currently only manufactured at the plant in Argentina and was no longer sold in Europe in 2021, fell to 45,400 deliveries to customers in 2021 (previous year: 52,100). In the summer of 2022, the new Amarok will be presented, which is the first result of the cooperation with Ford and will then be available again in Europe.

In the past year, the Crafter had 62,300 vehicles (previous year 61,700) and was able to increase the proportion of fully electric eCrafters to 1500 units (+ 29.4 percent).

Less sales in Eastern Europe

The market in Eastern Europe was down 9.4 percent for VWN to 30,200 vehicle handovers. In Mexico, VWN’s only market in North America, there was a decrease to 4600 vehicles (previous year 7000). In South America, sales rose by 16.5 percent to 32,900 vehicles compared to the previous year (previous year: 28,200).

The Asia / Pacific region increased by 10.7 percent to 17,500 deliveries to customers. In Africa, sales rose from 7,700 to 9,000 vehicles. In the Middle East there was a growth of 12.9 percent to 16,600 vehicles.
