The first green and self-sufficient hydropower plant in Spain will start up at the end of the year and will be public

A team of Spanish researchers from the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) has developed the first self-sufficient hydroelectric plant in Spain, what will you use green hydrogen generated in situ Y It will be of public service.

A technology that adapts to the environment and demand

However, it also has drawbacks, and one of the main ones is the complication and the costs generated by its transport. With the technology developed by the CSIC, we could be before a possible solution of the most practical.

To be self-sufficient, this hydrogenerates uses photovoltaic panels as electricity supply: the sunlight it stores serves to drive electrolysis and generate green hydrogen in the same station. The objective of this development is to demonstrate, in real service conditions, the potential of this technology.

Likewise, as explained by the CSIC researcher Luis Valiño, the new hydro generator “will have the addition of technology developed by research groups from LIFTEC and the Institute of Robotics and Industrial Informatics” (IRI, CSIC-UPC) and will be tested thanks to to an agreement with the service station company Zoilo Ríos.

For this reason, it will be located in the company’s facilities at the “El Cisne” service station, on the A-2 motorway (Madrid-Barcelona), a few kilometers from Zaragoza.

Among the advantages offered by this new hydrogen is that “it will have an intelligent control system to coordinate its operation and will provide modularity and flexibility,” Valiño details.

This system will provide production and demand forecasts and will include meteorological calculations that will allow predict solar energy irradiation at 48/72 hours view and artificial intelligence algorithms to economically and energetically optimize the system. “The entire system can be remotely controlled via the Internet,” adds the researcher.

Being modular and flexible, the hydro generator will allow it to adapt to different demands (vehicle flow, time distribution…) and to different locations (availability of renewable resources, network connection, connection power). The CSIC researchers intend that once the demonstration phase is over, this technology will be marketable and widely penetrate the market.

Likewise, this initiative aims to serve as a model for the Implementation of the future network of hydrogen stations in Spain. This collaboration between the CSIC and the company Zoilo Ríos will take place over the next three years (until December 2024) and will allow the CSIC research groups to evaluate the operation of the different technologies that will be used in the facility, both in regarding the generation of renewable H2 as storage, advanced energy management and dispensing.

For its part, the company will be responsible for the tasks of adapting the service station, the administrative procedures required for the installation, as well as providing the necessary resources for the operation of the hydroelectric plant during the start-up and demonstration phase. , or the maintenance of it.

Once the project is finished, according to the CSIC, the agreement contemplates technology transfer developed to Grupo Zoilo Ríos through an exclusive exploitation license.
