The Subaru STI E-RA is a 1,088 hp electric beast that heralds Subaru’s return to international competition

Subaru has revealed in Tokyo Auto Salon (the Japanese equivalent of the SEMA Show and the Essen Show) a supercar electric car with more than 1,000 CV with the aim of rolling in less than 7 minutes per lap to the north loop of the Nürburgring.

Its about Subaru STI E-RA Concept, a model that Subaru Tecnica International (STI) has launched “with the aim of gaining experience and training in new technologies in the world of motorsports in this era of carbon neutrality”.

The first objective of this model is to try to set a “lap time of 400 seconds (6 minutes and 40 seconds)”, they say from STI, on the Nürburgring circuit from 2023. Before that, throughout this 2022 the STI E-RA will roll on several Japanese circuits so that its designers and pilots gather information before launching themselves for the ultimate challenge in 2023.

1088 hp for Subaru’s future electric racing car

It uses a total of four motors – one at each wheel – and has a combined power of 1.088 CV (800 kW)exactly the same as the concept Mission R, conceived in a similar way, and that Porsche revealed last year.

The extremely high torque delivered by each motor can be instantly modified according to need, thanks to an advanced system of torque vectoring specifically designed to “provide driving pleasure” they say at Subaru.

According to the STI press release, these engines are of its own design, although it is said that they have been designed by Yamaha exclusively for Subaru.

Porsche Mission R

The Porsche Mission R could be a rival to the Subaru STI E-RA in the future E-GT championship.

It is curious the objective that they have set for Subaru. While a time of 6 minutes 40 seconds is crazy per se. Thus, Subaru’s objective would be to improve the time of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS (6’43”300). However, it would not be a record, neither in absolute terms nor for an electric.

The electric car with the lap record is the Volkswagen ID R He set a time of 6 minutes 05 seconds. Yes, it would improve the times of the Porsche Taycan and of Tesla Model S Plaid, but these two are series cars and not a prototype expressly designed with the aim of destroying the time at the ‘Ring.

And it is that in reality Subaru’s objective is not so much the record as validating the car for future competition. Thus, Subaru chose to mount a motor on each wheel to allow optimal power delivery and better control of body movements (roll and pitch), but also because this configuration is allowed by the FIA regulations for the new E-GT competition which will be launched in 2023.

Subaru says it will return to racing as part of an initiative to improve the driving characteristics of its road cars and to prepare for a “future electrified society”.
