The good news is that the Toyota Yaris GRMN which has been in the oven for months, has just debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show and has already become the main star of the show due to its abundant attributes. The bad is that only 500 units will be manufactured that’s it GR Yaris hypervitaminized and will be available exclusively on the Japanese market.
As expected, the Yaris GRMN is slimmer, stiffer and sharper than “its little brother” but surprisingly, it’s not more powerful.
Its 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine still offers the same 272 hp as the GR Yaris but its torque does increase by 20 Nm (we must remember that the Japanese version is slightly more powerful than the European, which produces 261 hp and 360 Nm).
A hot Hatch that will be manufactured by hand
Regarding the Toyota Yaris GR, the improvements of the hot hatch with the illustrious surname Gazoo Racing Masters of the Nürburgring they focus on weight reduction, the rigidity of its bodywork, mechanical adjustments such as those of its transmission scheme and aesthetic touches so that no one can confuse this car with a normal utility.
The Yaris GRMN is 10mm lower than Yaris GR thanks to a new set-up of the suspension and how much with a width of tracks 10 mm greater. Furthermore, it is 20kg lighter thanks to the use of carbon fiber in elements of the car such as the hood, the roof or the rear spoiler, since its rear seats have been eliminated.
To increase its rigidity, strength and poise, the GRMN has 565 additional welding points and up to 12 m of extra adhesive elements have been used in its manufacture.
In the mechanical section, in addition to the 1.6 G16E-GTS its torque has increased to 390 Nm (available between 3,200 and 4,000 rpm), this version has a six-speed manual gearbox with tighter gear ratios and with mechanical differential limited slip.
The GRMN Yaris will be offered with two very tempting optional packages (Circuit Package and Rally Package) and will be manufactured by takumi craftsmen at brand facilities.
For those looking for a little more action, the “Circuit” package add to the above adjustable Bilstein shocks, larger brakes, specific 18-inch wheels and aesthetic improvements such as side skirts and a tremendous spoiler. With this optional package only 50 units will go on sale.
As for the “Rally” package, it includes, among others, GR shock absorbers and short stabilizer bars, skid plates and a house brand anti-roll bar.
Towards autumn of this year, Toyota will make its exclusive “Toyota GR Garage” service available to the owners of each Yaris GRMN for the customization of aspects related to the aesthetics or mechanics of the car.
Reservations are already open for the 500 units available and Toyota will have to resort to a lottery for its award due to the avalanche of orders. Deliveries will begin in the summer and prices start at 7,317,000 yen, which at current exchange rates is equivalent to little more than 56,000 euros.
