Sustainable mobility: City council wants greater freedom of action in traffic management

The German Association of Cities wants greater freedom of action for the cities in traffic management. “We are concerned with more safety for bicycle and pedestrian traffic, simplified parking space management and more flexible options for 30 km/h in cities,” said General Manager Helmut Dedy of the German Press Agency in Berlin. He welcomed statements by Transport Minister Volker Wissing. The FDP politician wants to make it easier for cities to prescribe a 30 km/h speed limit on their streets.

“Assessing on the spot whether, when and which measures are necessary and possible for sustainable mobility is a good approach,” said Dedy. “We hope that the Ministry of Transport will soon initiate the necessary steps.” Adapted speeds on site are an important basis for liveable cities.

Wissing “open to different approaches”

To do this, it must be possible for the municipalities to order the speed limit of 30 km/h for individual streets in built-up areas, regardless of particularly dangerous situations, said Dedy. Some cities would also like to use model projects to investigate how road traffic would be affected if a general speed limit of 30 km/h was imposed and a speed limit of 50 km/h was only permitted on main roads.

Wissing had said to the specialist service “Tagesspiegel Background”: “The local communities know best what is good for their residents. That’s why I’m open to different approaches and fields of experimentation.” However, he is not convinced of a nationwide 30 km/h speed limit. This speed limit makes less sense on thoroughfares.
