Steam Game Store Finally Coming to Chrome OS in Alpha

We had already been announcing it days ago, and today it finally begins to be a reality. We are talking about the arrival of the well-known Steam game store, from Valve, to Chrome OS.

Its arrival occurs in alpha phase for selected devices, whose owners choose to move your devices to the dev channel version of Chrome OS.

In order for more games to work well, Google makes it only available with devices that have Intel XE graphics, an 11th generation i5 or i7 processor, and at least 8GB of RAM.

Even so, it warns that if a game needs 6 GB of RAM, it may not work quite well on a computer with 8 GB, and it also recognizes graphics rescaling problems on screens with resolutions higher than 1080p.

And from the outset those titles of games that have Linux versions, although thanks to the Proton compatibility layer, it is also possible to run games intended for the Windows operating system.

Based on the list shared in a blog post, the models that may be compatible with Steam are the following:

  • Acer Chromebook 514 (CB514-1W)
  • Acer Chromebook 515 (CB515-1W)
  • Acer Chromebook Spin 713 (CP713-3W)
  • ASUS Chromebook Flip CX5 (CX5500)
  • ASUS Chromebook CX9 (CX9400)
  • HP Pro c640 G2 Chromebook
  • Lenovo 5i-14 Chromebook

Excepted from this list are those that have a CPU with an i3 or 4GB of RAM. In addition, they indicate what are the steps to follow in compatible equipment:

  • On your compatible Chromebook, switch to the Dev channel.
  • After upgrading, go to chrome://flags#borealis-enabled and set the value to Enabled.
  • After reboot, open a crosh terminal with ctrl+alt+t.
  • Type “insert_coin volteer-JOlkth573FBLGa” and press enter.
  • Follow the setup flow to install Steam.
  • Sign in with your Steam account and start playing!

It will be a matter of the support evolving so that at some point in the future, it can be available in a stable way for a greater number of users, thus serving Chromebooks as versatile devices, leaving the scarcity of possibilities far behind.
