Terrible news for motorsports fans: Nani Roma has cancer. The two-time Dakar champion, once on motorcycles and once in a car, has undergone surgery for a malignant tumor in his bladder and is already receiving chemotherapy treatment. This has been announced by the Spanish pilot himself.

Fortunately, it appears that Roma’s tumor has been detected early enough for it to be treatable. The forecasts of the medical team that is treating Rome are that he will be out for six months, so he will miss the Andalusia Rally, but the pilot is confident of being able to drive in the Dakar 2023.

It all started when Nani Roma began to feel pain in the area. An emergency check-up was carried out in Vic and, later, he went to the Quirón-Dexeus hospital. Initially the pilot believed that it was a kidney stone, but the medical services confirmed the worst: it was a malignant tumor, although in a very early stage of its development.

Nani Roma has already undergone surgery to remove the tumor and now faces two months of daily chemotherapy sessions. When the treatment ends, he will have to undergo a new operation and then he will face the recovery period. You are already designing a nutrition and training plan.

Now the pilot faces a six-month recovery process, so he will miss the Andalusia Rally and also a large part of Prodrive’s testing program for the Dakar. But the team is counting on him to get on the BRX Hunter 4×4 next January in Saudi Arabia. As soon as he got out of the operation, Roma was already thinking about it.

Nani Roma is a myth of world motorsport. He was the first Spaniard to win the Dakar Rally, back in 2004, when he was still competing in the motorcycle category. The following year he switched to cars and there he also has a win, in 2014 driving for MINI and in a spectacular duel with Stéphane Peterhansel.
