couriers will have to work hand in hand

Tomorrow, messaging systems will have to be interoperable with each other. This is one of the measures that publishers like Apple and Facebook will have to put in place in Europe, as part of the Digital Markets Act.

The Digital Markets Act (DMA), in other words the European legislation on digital services, was the subject of an agreement between the negotiators of the Parliament and the European Council. This bill, which still needs to be adopted by the two organizations, contains many measures aimed at banning certain practices of the major platforms that play the role of access controller to their services.

Interoperable functions

Among these measures, there is one that directly targets major messaging services, such as Facebook’s WhatsApp and Messenger, or iMessage (Apple). These applications are going to have to open and “ be interoperable with smaller messaging platforms who request it. This means that it will be possible to send an iMessage (in other words a text message that passes through Apple’s servers) on the Signal app on an Android smartphone, knowing that iMessages are currently only compatible with Apple systems.

The DMA also indicates that users of any platform will be able to exchange messages, send files or make video calls on all messaging applications. For the latter, this will undeniably be a plus, on the other hand on the technical side this upheaval promises to be quite a headache, in particular if we add the encryption of conversations: each messaging system uses its own technology.

The European Commission will give a variable deadline to implement the various necessary measures: three months for interoperable text messaging, but two years for group chats, and four years for audio and video calls. If the European executive is ready to give time, on the other hand it seems well and truly decided to force the integration of messaging services between them, which risks causing serious friction with the major players in the sector.
