The first 240 W USB-C cables are appearing from a manufacturer, bringing hope that USB Type-C will establish itself a little more as the universal standard. However, there is still a long way to go and not all cables are created equal.

USB-C hopes to establish itself as the universal standard, even at Apple and thanks in particular to the efforts of the European Union. The USB Implementers Forum’s USB connector is evolving and recently offered a 2.1 revision. The latter is not insignificant and brings power up to 240 W, more than twice the current power. One of USB-C’s major flaws is the relatively low power it can transmit, limiting itself so far at a maximum power of 100 W.

A limit that slows the progress of USB-C for more demanding devices, such as laptops. Even today, machines that need a lot of power use proprietary connectors. This is where the USB-IF comes in with its USB-C revision 2.1 which promises to raise this limit to 240 W, or 48 A at 5 V. Nearly a year after this announcement, the Dutch manufacturer Club 3D decides to offer cables that meet this standard. Three different cables are capable of delivering 240 W of power, opening up new perspectives for manufacturers.

Different cables, but all designed for 240W power supply

Good news, then, on paper, but nothing is simple with USB-C. These three capable present technical differences and do not all meet the same standards. The CAC-1576, which is 1 meter long, is the most ambitious since it supports theUSB4 Gen 3×2 with a transfer speed of 40 Gb/s. It can even handle video streams up to 8K at 60Hz.

The CAC-1575 measures 2 meters and offers slightly less impressive performance. He claims a USB4 Gen 2×2 compatibility for a transfer speed of 20 Gb/S and supports 4K at 60 Hz. Finally, the CAC-1573 will undoubtedly be the most affordable since it is limited USB 2.0 support for a transfer limited to 480 Mb/s. Unlike the first two models, it is not equipped for video.

Before choosing, it will therefore be necessary to take care to look twice before finding the cable that best meets your needs. In any case, you will still have time to think about it since these cables are only appearing from a foreign manufacturer. They do not seem, for the time being, not yet available from retailers.
