Nintendo fears the transition to the new generation of consoles that will succeed the Nintendo Switch.
The Nintendo Switch is not done with us, and that’s good, we’re not done with it either. Even Nintendo doesn’t expect to see it leave circulation before 4 or 5 years. And yet, the firm is already beginning to prepare the future of its consoles, and in particular the successor to the Nintendo Switch. If we still have no information about him, Nintendo is already worried about the role he will have to play and the resulting transition.
A dreaded transition
During a conversation with investors, Shuntaro Furukawa, the current president of Nintendo, said he feared the moment of transition, and did not want the fiasco after Wii or after Nintendo DS to happen again. After the release of these two consoles, which literally marked video game history, Nintendo experienced a significant drop in sales for the following generations. He explains :
“Whether we will be able to transition from Nintendo Switch to the next generation just as easily is a major concern for us. Based on our experiences with the Wii, Nintendo DS and other hardware, it’s very clear that one of the main questions is how to switch easily from one platform to another.
To mitigate the risk of failure, we focus on building long-term relationships with our customers. We will continue to release new software on the Nintendo Switch, but we will also offer services that use Nintendo Accounts and other intellectual property outside of game software. sustainable with our customers.”
Nintendo is aiming for the moon with its projects
Nothing is therefore gained in the long term for Nintendo, which has nevertheless enjoyed exceptional popularity in recent years. After the launch of the Wii U, which did not really catch on with the public, the Nintendo Switch and its hybrid console concept has won over players, but also convinced them since 2017 that it is the best family console. .
Recently, the firm announced that the Nintendo Switch had succeeded in overtaking the sales of the Wii with 107 million copies sold, but also thatit still sells over 20 million units a yearwhich is simply phenomenal, even though in terms of hardware and pure performance, the Nintendo Switch is well below its most direct competitors.
It is also worth remembering that players are patiently waiting the arrival of a Switch Prowhich should really set things straight with Sony and Nintendo, and which would give even more weight to Nintendo’s argument.
