Official! McLaren will race in Formula E from next season occupying the place of Mercedes

McLaren will also race in Formula E the next season. The legendary British team has just announced that it will join electric car racing in 2023, and it will do so by occupying the Mercedes position. McLaren buys the team from its partners in Formula 1, who had already announced his departure.

Since the beginning of last year, McLaren had an agreement with Formula E for which a place was reserved for them to run in the electric category. A contract that they could execute unilaterally, and that they have decided to do now, when the current champion team, Mercedes, has been put within buying distance.

McLaren will be in Formula 1, IndyCar, Extreme E and now Formula E

This incorporation of McLaren seems to have been decided after the recent presentation of the new gen3and has taken advantage the Berlin event, where Formula E contests this weekend a double date, to announce it. A lifesaver for the electric category.

McLaren always looks to compete against the best and at the forefront of technology, giving our fans and partners new ways to be excited, entertained and inspired. Formula E, like all of our racing series, ticks all those boxes,” says Zak Brown, McLaren’s CEO.

And it is that this entry of McLaren in Formula E means that those of Woking are practically everywhere. They run in Formula 1, where they also refuse to sell the team to Audiand also compete in IndyCar and Extreme E. It would only be necessary for the LMDh project to be completed for the WEC and IMSA, although each time it seems colder.

“I firmly believe that Formula E will give McLaren a competitive edge through a greater understanding of electric car racing, while providing a point of difference to our fans and partners, and continuing to propel us along our sustainability journey.”

The arrival of McLaren is also an oxygen bomb for Formula E itself, since after the departures of Mercedes, BMW and Audi from the category have managed to recruit McLaren Ya Maserati to minimize damage. And on top of that, the champion structure of Mercedes, which won the first world championship last year, is kept alive.

McLaren has also confirmed that Ian James will continue at the head of the project, but a couple of pilots will have to be found. Stoffel Vandoorne has already signed to go to DS next season, while Nyck de Vries is sounding strongly about making the jump to Formula 1 with Williams, even in the middle of 2022.
