the new cash cows of the Embracer group

Expect to see remakes, spin-offs, remasters and other Tomb Raider and Deus Ex stamped productions in the years to come.

Just because Square Enix has decided to sell some of its licenses doesn’t mean we can’t get anything out of it. This is exactly what the Embracer group intends to prove, which has acquired the 3 Western studios of Square Enix, and many successful franchises such as Tomb Raider, Deus Ex or Thief, to name but a few. If we knew that Embracer Group would not abandon the development of the next Tomb Raiderthings go much further than that.

Embracer’s New Gold Mine

In a financial report, the firm says it is happy to have been able to get its hands on such video game treasures with so much potential. Some of the licenses had been shelved for a few years, but others were able to diversify and acquire a solid player base that can only grow stronger over time. This is why the group declares:

Post quarter end, we further strengthened our development capabilities and intellectual property (IP) portfolio by entering into an agreement to acquire Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montreal, including the Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief and Legacy of Kain and many more. The announcement received an enthusiastic and positive reception. We see great potential, not only in sequels, but also in remakes, remasters, spin-offs as well as transmedia projects across the group.

By transmedia, understand productions beyond video games, that is to say the production of films, series or documentaries. For the moment, the group has not yet explained how these ambitions will materialize in the years to come. One thing is certain, however, these newly acquired franchises will become real cash cows, that Embracer intends to make profitable until the last drop.

A false good decision?

If this announcement can be welcomed in a positive way, it can also have an extremely pejorative backlash. It’s been a few years now that many players have decried the lack of originality of the studios, and the ease that lies behind the remakes, remasters and other productions that would not be new. Tired of playing titles that feel reheated, this type of development rarely finds favor in the eyes of purists.

It remains to be seen whether this decision will be the right one. On the other hand, the sequels and spin-offs should in turn be particularly expected, so not everything is to be thrown away in the words of the firm.
