BMW has renewed the entry-level model of the BMW X world, bringing the X1 to its third generation. Also it is BMW iX1 available for the first time, 100% electric variant of the German SUV / Crossover. Let’s find out all the news on the two models. Aesthetically the new X1 is distinguished by slim adaptive LED headlights, a large BMW kidney grille, X-shaped lines radiating to the sides and chrome strips in the lower air intake.
All 2022 variants are additionally equipped with 17-inch light alloy wheelswhile they are 18 inches on the xLine e M Sport – which can be optionally available in 19-inch and even 20-inch versions for the first time on X1.
The technology of the new BMW X1 / BMW iX1
On the infotainment front we have the BMW OS 8 and the BMW Curved Display (to know more: new BMW iDrive with OS 8), complete with BMW Maps navigation system. BMW X1 also offers four USB-C posts, two 12V outlets and a full suite of driver assistance systems.
The new BMW X1 offers its occupants the latest generation BMW iDrive multisensory experience, so we also have the BMW Live Cockpit Plus as standard. The display cluster features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch center display. BMW iDrive offers intuitive voice and tactile control, and thanks to the highly digitized interior we have very few buttons, controls and switches in sight. Present the modalities My Modes to customize the vehicle, additionally the function Augmented View is available as an option for the cloud-based BMW Maps system. An internal camera allows you to take pictures of the occupants and share them via smartphone, and one is available on the new X1 Personal eSIM ready for 5Gthe BMW Digital Key Plus (which also allows you to open / close the vehicle from an Apple smartphone), BMW ID and the integration of smartphones thanks to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
In terms of driving assistance we have a rich standard equipment which includes the Cruise Control with braking function and the front collision warning system, which now also detects oncoming traffic when turning left, pedestrians and cyclists when turning right. Then there are the parking assistance systems and the reversing assistance camera.
Looking at the options, the list becomes much longer, in fact we have the steering assistant and lane control, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go functionActive Navigation, Exit Warning and BMW Head-Up Display, as well as Surround View, Remote 3D View, BMW Drive Recorder and Remote Theft Recorder functions.
All these functions can be updated over time via the system Remote Software Upgradeswhich also allows you to add new features (although availability depends on the hardware fitted to the vehicle and market conditions).
The engines of the new BMW X1
Let’s move on to the engines, which are quite varied in this generation. The new X1 will be launched with two petrol engines and two diesel engines, with new generation powertrains Efficient Dynamics of the BMW Group. The basic hybrid technology is Second Generation 48V Mild Hybridwith an electric motor integrated into the 7-speed Steptronic gearbox.
We will therefore have the BMW X1 xDrive23i four-cylinder with 160 kW / 218 hp of combo power (thermal 150 kW / 204 hp, electric 14 kW / 19 hp), also in the launch list we will also find the BMW X1 sDrive18i with 115 kW / 156 hp three-cylinder engine. On the BMW X1 xDrive23d instead we will have a four-cylinder diesel engine and mild hybrid technology, for a maximum power of 155 kW / 211 hp (thermal 145 kW / 197 hp, electric 14 kW / 19 hp), while on the BMW X1 sDrive18d we will have 110 kW / 150 hp. Before talking about the 100% electric iX1, we also point out the presence of due modelli Plug-in Hybrid, which compared to the past promise greater sportiness, efficiency and charging capacity. In addition, BMW claims to have increased the electric range; on these versions we await more information.
Electric BMW iX1
If the BMW iX is too high for your needs (read more: with the new BMW iX in Val D’Aosta), the new BMW iX1 could be the perfect cut to enter the electric world with a German vehicle. There BMW iX1 xDrive30 it is the first all-wheel drive electric car introduced by the brand in the premium compact segment.
To push it we have two electric motors, one for each axis, capable of delivering one combined power of 230 kW / 313 hp (with temporary boost effect) and an overall torque of 494 Nm. The 0-100 km / h sprint is possible in 5.7 seconds, despite the muscular appearance of the car.
BMW eDrive technology is now in its fifth generation and now also includes extremely efficient charging, with the same improved charging software seen on the BMW i7 (we have configured the new BMW i7). The high-voltage battery is placed flat in the vehicle underbody e promises a range of 413-438 kmeven if we know that they are data to be tested in the field that can vary based on a thousand factors.
