These two very popular iPhones will soon no longer be compatible with WhatsApp

WhatsApp regularly cleans up the list of supported devices, which is no surprise. On the other hand, the next batch may pose a problem because the smartphones that will soon be incompatible are still quite used.

From October 24 this year, the iPhone 5 and 5C will no longer be compatible with WhatsApp. This means that users of these smartphones will have to change if they wish to continue using Meta’s instant messaging service. The iPhone 5 was released in September 2012, almost ten years ago, while the iPhone 5C was launched in September 2013.

Long life expectancy

Despite this great age (on the scale of smartphones, at least!), these smartphones are still widely used. Their success at the time, and their robustness, allowed these devices to pass from hand to hand in the same family or to find buyers on the second-hand market on several occasions.

The iPhone 5C in particular has had a great career. If the launch of this model was probably not the huge box hoped for by Apple at the time, sales remained at good levels in the following years. Users particularly appreciate the colors and the good durability of this range, whose quality/price ratio has continued to improve over time.

But all good things come to an end, like WhatsApp support. For the application, it is a means of implementing new functions without having to deal with difficult, if not impossible, compatibility with older versions of operating systems. iOS 10 and iOS 11 will therefore no longer be supported by messaging from October.

This effectively excludes the iPhone 5 and 5C, which do not go beyond iOS 10.3.4. If you have more recent smartphones still running iOS 10 or iOS 11, it is possible to update their operating system to iOS 12, in order to continue enjoying WhatsApp.
