Apple is stepping up a gear

Apple has just unveiled its new generation of Silicon chips, the M2. This new solution promises to take the brand’s computers to a new level, and it starts with the MacBook Air M2 and MacBook Pro M2.

Mentioned for many months, the M2 chip was finally presented at WWDC 2022. If the event is usually dedicated to software announcements, Apple has decided to talk about hardware with the announcement of a new generation of chips. After a successful first draft, the Cupertino company wants to confirm and drive the point home with this new M2 chip. Good news never comes alone, it lands in the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

The M2 chip

Building on the success of the M1, Apple is emphasizing increased performance and reduced energy consumption. The new M2 chip benefits from a 5 nanometer engraving (like the M1) and has no less than 20 billion transistors (16 billion for the M1). Apple mentions the presence of new “performance” and “efficiency” cores, as well as a 100 Gbps bandwidth. This represents a 50% increase over the M1.

The M2 also supports up to 24 GB of unified memory (LPDDR5). Apple promises an 18% performance boost over the previous generation, and claims the M2 is 1.9 times faster than the “latest 10-core laptop chip”. The SoC features four high-performance and four high-efficiency cores, with a shared cache of 16MB on the performance cores and 4MB on the efficiency ones.

As expected, this chip focuses on improving graphics performance. The M2 chip can offer up to 10 graphics processing units (GPUs) and offer up to 35% more performance than M1 (25% at equivalent consumption). This new chip also offers a new neural engine and a secure enclave. On the multimedia side, it offers native support for 8K H.264, HEVC and ProRes video streams.

The first Macs to ship this M2 chip are the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

Le MacBook Air M2

The first model announced with an M2 chip, the MacBook Air M2 was highly anticipated. The ultraportable changes its look and opts for a flat design with a thickness of 11.3 mm and a weight of 1.2 kg. Closer to the shapes of the 14 or 16-inch MacBook Pro, this new iteration has a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display with thinner borders. Larger, this screen is also brighter than that of its predecessor ranging up to 500 nits (+25%).

As with many Apple products, the notch is present and allows the MacBook Air M2 to offer a webcam 1080p which would be twice as low-light performance, according to Apple. The brand also mentions an improvement in terms of microphones and speakers (4 in total), riding the wave of teleworking.

Besides its design, the main curiosity of this new MacBook Air is the presence of the M2 chip. Mentioned above, it must help the ultraportable to take a new step in terms of performance and endurance. The manufacturer announces 18 hour battery life in video playback and the MacBook Air M2 accommodate a MagSafe port. Added to this are two USB-C ports and a 3.5mm jack port, as well as support for the fast charge.

The new MacBook Air M2 comes in four colorswith a starting price set at 1 499 euros. Note that the MacBook Air M1 remains available.

Le MacBook Pro M2

Following the announcement of the MacBook Air 2, Apple announced the arrival of a MacBook Pro M2. This model does not evolve in terms of design, but promises to be more efficient thanks to the integration of the M2 chip. This is the main novelty of this 13-inch MacBook Pro with M2 chip that will debut at a price of 1,599 euros.

Apple announces on its new 13-inch MacBook Pro offers 39% higher performance over its predecessor. He is even 3.4 times faster than a MacBook Pro with an Intel Core i7 processor 8th generation.
