Starting in 2035 Europe only wants to sell new electric vehicles: what until now has been a project, an idea, in a few hours it could become an absolute realitygiven that the European Parliament is called to vote between 7 and 8 June 2022. A definitely political choice, which however lays solid foundations on environmental protection in the European Union, as well as being an interesting solution on the health and energy independence.

To say it is not us but the various reports produced by Europe and one new research conducted by ANSA in collaboration with the agencies AFP (France), DPA (Germany), Agerpres (Romania), ANP (Netherlands) and TT (Sweden) for the European Data News Hub (EDNH). According to the data collected, the vote to the package Fit for 55 to cut current greenhouse gas emissions it is very essential and to understand it it is necessary to list a few key numbers.

Electric cars to improve our health

Even though the pollution problem in our cities doesn’t just come from cars, they have a in any case devastating impact on the health of European citizens and Italians in particular. Our country is in fact the black jersey for premature deaths from nitrogen dioxidealso called NO2.

All the challenges of the automotive sector

The automotive sector is thus faced with a series of challenges that aim to reduce emissions from new cars by 100% by 2035, which means that dealers will be able to offer customers only zero-emission cars starting from January 1, 2035. will therefore be impossible to buy new petrol carsdiesel or other fossil fuels.

Of course, because electricity is completely clean they need attention both along the production chain and subsequently, with recharges made with clean energy from renewable sources. In this regard, the EU is undertaking to publish a new regulation relating to batteries, with the manufacturers who will have to guarantee social and environmental sustainability. Then we have the problem of costs: to date an electric car costs significantly more than a petrol or diesel one, so we must work to ensure that there is a parity of costs. According to a new study by Bloomberg New Energy Finance wanted by T&E, Electric and traditional cars will cost the same as early as 2026 for most of the segments. Given the current market situation, with all the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine that are driving up the prices of some fundamental raw materials for battery construction (skyrocketing lithium and oil), price parity in 2026 seems a bit too optimistic to us, but we hope that the research data is true.

Then we must face the chapter “Charging infrastructure”. To date, there are 225,000 charging points for electric cars throughout Europe, but the European Green Deal’s target is 1 million charging points by 2025 and 3.5 million by 2030, another difficult but not impossible challenge. Looking at Italy, in 2021 the charging points for BEVs grew by 35% compared to 2020.
As of December 31, 2021, 26,024 charging points and 13,233 infrastructures, which can be stations or columns, were installed in 10,503 places freely accessible to the public.

We who work constantly with electric cars know that sterile data “on paper” often does not match the reality of the facts, with columns out of use for technical reasons or extremely slow charging points that really improve the electric experience slightly, even in this case, however, we hope for a sudden acceleration in terms of the diffusion and reliability of the services.

The last big challenge of the electric switch then concerns the energy production, as all these battery-powered vehicles will have to be recharged in some way … Well Europe is preparing to completely detach itself from Russian gas and become independent by investing heavily in renewable resources, even if there are several issues still to be resolved – such as “Nuclear power Yes or no?” (the UK focuses on wind and nuclear power).

Meanwhile, there is already progress in battery production, with the EU forming the European Battery Alliance (EBA) in 2017 to produce lithium-ion batteries for cars. To date, as of June 2022, there are 6 Gigafactories operating throughout Europe and another 30 will be put into operation between 2025 and 2030. The goal is to go from 62 GWh to 664 GWh of batteries by 2030, with Italy which will also be an active part of the process. Our country will in fact have at least 3 Gigafactory, think of the ACC Italy of Termoli, in Molise, of the ITALVOLT in Scarmagno, in Piedmont, and of the FAAM / FIB of Monterubbiano, in the Marche, for a total of 94 GWh.

The last chain of all this green process in the transport sector will be the final consumer, who will be pushed to buy electricity thanks to new state incentives and tax breaks: the Draghi government has already confirmed the Ecobonus 2022 for cars and motorcycleswhich will be replicated in the same way (but with different funds) also in 2023 and 2024, with registrations of electric cars certainly on the rise.

In 2021, 137,283 BEVs were sold in our country, for a market share of over 9%; 100% is still a long way off, but the snowball has only begun its journey along the escarpment, it will soon become an unstoppable ball and the decisive vote of Europe will give it a considerable boost. In the next few hours the history of the old continent will surely be made.
