In its latest reliability studyin addition to the cars and brands that more and less go through the workshopthe Spanish consumer organization OCU pick up the most frequent breakdowns suffered by cars marketed in five European countries: Spain, France, Italy, Portugal and Belgium.
Also what it means on average per year for the pocket to go to official workshops to cover maintenance, beyond breakdowns: those of Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Volvo are positioned as the most expensive.
This report, based on a survey of more than 52,000 drivers, also concludes that reliability is the main aspect taken into account when buying a car (37%), ahead of size and needs. (21%) and design (9%).
Electrical components, brakes or electronics, the most recurrent
A total of 326 cars, and 523 variants, have been analyzed in this new OCU report. And in addition to the ranking of brands and cars that are more and less reliable, the most common faults of passenger cars, as well as the brands that suffer the most.
Thus, at the head are the faults derived from electrical componentswith a 17 %the most common being the battery, fuses, light bulbs and warning lights, as well as more serious and expensive ones, such as the window regulators and wiring.
The car brands that most bring together these problems are Alfa Romeo, Chevrolet, Citroën, Fiat, Renault and SEAT.
The second most recurrent failure is related to the break systemand 13 %, being the components that most require repairs or replacement pumps, lines, brake discs and drums or cables. Again they repeat with a greater number of problems in this aspect Alfa Romeo, Chevrolet, Citroën and Fiat.
And the podium is closed by electronic problems of cars, with a 8 %. Cars from firms such as Alfa Romeo, Chevrolet, Fiat, Renault, Opel and Lancia are the ones that visit the workshop the most for breakdowns related to their electronic systems.
Los engine trouble and its components represent a 8 % of failures that require repair, being the fourth most recurrent cause for going to the workshop. In this aspect, the cars that most undergo repairs are models from Alfa Romeo, Audi, Chevrolet, Citröen, Fiat and Renault.
Other common failures have been failures related to the power system (carburetors, fuel pumps, injection systems…) or to the steering, suspension, axles or tires. Both account for 7% of the total.
The minor ones are represented by problems with air conditioning and air conditioning systems, which are responsible for 6% of breakdowns.
More than 230 euros difference per year in official workshops
In addition to visits to the workshop to correct repairs, the maintenance represent a significant amount for consumers’ pockets, ranging on average between 114 euros and 350 euros on average per year, and official centers.
Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Volvo are postulated as the most expensive in terms of periodic reviews, with 350 euros per year the first two and 333 euros third.
It is true that these three brands are premium firms, which implies not only higher priced cars, but also more expensive parts and components.
Meanwhile, this study indicates the cheapest to Hyundai (114 euros), Dacia (120 euros) and Renault (150 euros). The top five positions are closed by Nissan and SEAT with 180 euros, a figure also signed by Skoda and Toyota.
And as for the level of satisfaction with the official workshops, of the 20 brands analyzed in this regard, 11 get the highest score (five stars), while nine get a lower one (four stars).
In general, and beyond maintenance and repairs, European drivers say they are very satisfied with most brands, with the exception of Opel, Fiat, Lancia and Chevrolet, which are a little lower.
