We tested the new Nissan Juke Hybrid, an SUV with an ECO label that is committed to design and low consumption

The Nissan Juke It has been one of the most successful models in Europe of the Japanese brand. Just as the Nissan Qashqai was a pioneer in the compact SUV segment, the Juke has been a pioneer in that of the most urban SUVs, those that in the industry we call B-SUVs, such as the SEAT Arona or the new Toyota Yaris Cross.

The second generation arrived at the end of 2019 with a single motorization available: a 3-cylinder 1.0 petrol with 117 hp. Today finally premieres a 145 hp hybrid version and with eco labelthe new Nissan Juke Hybrid. We tested it and found out if it is the car that was missing from the Juke range to get back on the path of success.

The Nissan Juke has been a key model in Nissan’s success in Europe. It was on the market for just over 9 years and reached its most successful moment in its seventh year of life, the year in which most cars are already heading towards the starting gate. The previous Juke could even have continued to sell well beyond 10 years.

With this second generation, the brand has not moved away from what made the success of the model, popular for its design, either you love it or you hate it. The front design confirms the trend of separate optics while the rounded fins give it a muscular and robust air. At the rear, the design is more traditional. Goodbye to the pilots in the shape of a boomerang, the optical groups are now curiously a classic rectangular block.

The aesthetic changes of the hybrid version with respect to the gasoline model are minimal. The grille is virtually closed and features a black trim on top (now a hallmark of hybrids at Nissan), there are also a number of ‘Hybrid’ logos, as well as new wheel designs.

On board, the changes from the Juke 1.0 are also minimal. The instrument panel, analog when almost all its rivals are digital, loses the rev counter and gains a battery charge and power delivery indicator, with an indication of the optimal range of use of electrification.

The dashboard also gains an ‘EV’ button to force the use of the electric motor. Finally, in the Tekna finish, the top of the range, the BOSE car audio equipment, now has 10 speakers instead of eight, as in the Juke gasoline.

Another noticeable change is the volume of trunk. This goes from 422 liters to 354 liters, due to the presence of the 1.2 kWh capacity battery. Basically, it has lost the false bottom of the Juke 1.0 and now the boot floor is at the height of the load sill.

What does not change however, at least in the N-Design and Tekna finishes, is the sense of good quality perceived from the materials. It is an urban and versatile SUV, but the interior is very nice and moves away from interiors where hard and shiny plastics reign. On the contrary, everything conveys a sense of quality.

Nor does the habitability of the car change. Up front, there’s plenty of room and it’s easy to find an ideal driving position. Legroom in the rear seats remains unchanged. Even the tallest passengers can now travel on board without the risk of claustrophobia, which was not the case with the previous Juke.

A hybrid system with a curious gearbox

On a technical level, the Juke uses the same hybrid powertrain as the Renault Captur and the Clio E-Tech. This is made up of a 94 CV 4-cylinder naturally aspirated 1.6-litre gasoline associated with a 36 kW (49 CV) electric motor, to a 15 kW (20 CV) high-voltage starter-alternator-generator. In total, the Juke Hybrid can count on 145 hp and up to 205 Nm coming from the electric motor.

The gearbox is the same as in the Renault models. It’s about a 6-speed automated gearbox without synchronization and with claw coupling (a system similar to that of a push clutch), which is known in competition as a “crabot” change (a word borrowed from French, as many others in mechanics). It has four gears for the combustion engine and two for the electric motor.

Thus, the Juke Hybrid systematically starts at electric mode and can reach 55 km/h without using a drop of gasoline. According to homologation, this reduces fuel consumption to 5.2 l/100 km and CO₂ emissions to 118 g/km. So far the theory. But how does this translate to the wheel?

When starting the car, as in all hybrids according to the regulations, it starts electric and will always drive electric up to 55 km/h, if the state of the battery allows it or we do not request it more than necessary (steep slope, air conditioning on a hot day, strong acceleration). In any case, below 10 km/h the gasoline engine will automatically turn off and it will only move with the electric one.

Once underway, it surprises in a positive way the smooth running of the car. The transition between electric and thermal engine is the smoothest on the market, there is no vibration, jolt or sound eruption of the gasoline engine. You can still hear the petrol engine start up, but it’s still relatively unobtrusive.

The extremely smooth ride is also noticeable when changing gears. It’s almost impossible to tell when the gearbox is going up or down a gear. In practice, it seems that the motor acts only as a generator -which is not the case- and in the end it offers almost the same smoother ride than an electric. All this thanks to the non-synchronized gearbox whose actuation is carried out by the starter-alternator-generator motor.

The general smoothness is slightly altered by the suspensions that seem a bit hard in the city, at low speed. They are even a bit dry when going over highlights. It is the corollary of having to carry 90 kg more compared to the Juke 1.0 due to electric motors and battery. It is especially noticeable in the rear seats, since the battery is located under the trunk.

Although on a deteriorated surface in the city it can be somewhat annoying, on the road that firmness is appreciated. The car has poise, is well guided (the direction is also a little harder than in the 1.0, but it is appreciated) and does not reduce comfort at all.

Another positive point of the hybridization with respect to the 1.0 model is the greater vigor in the flow of circulation that allows the immediacy of the motor torque of the electric unit. Although the Juke with the 117 hp engine and automatic transmission seemed too slow to move freely, that feeling has disappeared with the hybrid version.

It is something especially remarkable in the city where the immediate delivery of the electric motor works wonders below 50 km / h. It is not a sports car, of course, but, in addition, the Hybrid has improved its 0-100 km/h time by 2 seconds, lowering it to 10.1 seconds. It is a time that places him at the level of his possible rivals.

In addition to smooth running, the Juke stands out for its regenerative braking and the good feeling that it transmits to its driver. It has a series of e-Pedal function, which allows almost completely without using the brake pedal in the city. Just by taking your foot off the accelerator, the car “brakes itself”, until it reaches 5 km/h. Be careful, it is still necessary to step on the brake for the car to stop completely.

But that regenerative braking, which all hybrid cars have, does not usually go well with physical braking, that of the brake discs and often, the braking feels strange with an apparent loss of bite at the moment in which the electric motor stops braking the car and the brake discs take over.

In the Juke Hybrid, unlike many hybrids, the braking feels natural. There is not that strange feeling of lack of initial bite and suddenly, when the physical brakes act, there is greater braking. Not here, the Juke has powerful regenerative braking that gives the sensation of braking with bite and when the physical brakes take over there is no noticeable difference.

Part of this is due to the presence of a iBooster, manufactured by Bosch. It is an electromechanical brake fluid pressurization booster that improves braking power while not reducing the recovery of kinetic energy from the brakes.

In most hybrids, the feeling of little bite is due to the system prioritizing energy recovery rather than stopping power. With the iBooster, you get stopping power and kinetic energy recovery.

Until now, the Juke Hybrid has shown a much more interesting proposal than the gasoline version. And it does not disappoint in the key section in a hybrid, consumption.

Despite a route proposed by Nissan in which there were more highways than urban roads, and that a server does not usually have a light right foot, consumption has been quite sparing, throwing a average of 5.9 l / 100 km.

With a car with more mileage (the test unit had just 600 km), there is no doubt that it is possible to approach 5.5 l/100 km. It is a noticeably lower consumption than the Juke 1.0 and similar to that of a Hyundai Kona HEV, less refined in its march than the Juke.
