Europe has made its decision: new thermal cars will be banned from 2035. But other measures complete this green pact.

The ban on new thermal cars seemed inevitable for a few years already, it was finally adopted this Wednesday, June 8 in the European Parliament. A historic decision, during which the deputies had to decide on the eight measures of the β€œclimate packageβ€œ, this project of the European Union also called β€œadjustment to the goal 55β€œ, who hears reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by the next decade, while aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050.

Born on the occasion of COP15, the European green pact (or green deal) materialized in 2019, with the drafting of a climate package presented by the European Commission last July. Consisting of several decisions β€œquite historical” estimated the MEP Pascal Canfin at the microphone of Franceinfo, the pact contains 14 measures, but only eight were submitted this week in the European Parliament.

Undoubtedly the most divisive measure of the green pact, the ban on the sale of new thermal cars by 2035 was finally enacted by Parliament this week. The deadline is set for 2035 to coincide with the objective of carbon neutrality by 2050. At a time when β€œan average car drives on European roads for fifteen years”the year 2035 therefore sounds like a logical first step, says Pascal Canfin.

On this point, European decisions correspond with the direction taken by most car manufacturers, many of whom have announced the end of their thermal production by 2035.

Certain measures rejected

As it stood, the text also provided enlargement of the European carbon market, which makes it possible to measure and control emissions from industries and electricity producers. The MACF (adjustment mechanism for carbon emissions at the borders) aimed in particular to β€œprevent companies from moving outside the European Union to avoid stricter emissions standards” details the European Parliament in a press release. To everyone’s surprise, the project was finally rejected by the EU, with some Green and Socialist MPs in particular considering the measures β€œnot ambitious enoughβ€œ.

However, the texts challenged by Parliament will not be immediately buried. The reform of the European carbon market, the mechanism for adjusting carbon emissions at the borders and the social fund for the climate will have to go back to committee next autumn. For their part, the measures adopted must now be adapted to each national legislation, for an application which could take place within a few months in the member countries.
