The new generation cars all tend to look a bit alike, especially when you look at the most popular segments such as SUVs and crossovers. Driving a Mazda, on the other hand, as we tend to often repeat in our articles, is a different experience, capable of leaving a strong imprint on our soul since we approach the car for the first time.
Then when you enter the cockpit the sensations multiply and much of the credit goes to design Kodo and the philosophy connected to it, which tends to see lines and shapes as pure art, conceived and built around the driver and passengers. A philosophy that obviously comes back again and again aboard the new Mazda CX-30 2022 which we have tried far and wide for two weeks. Let’s find out lights and shadows of a Crossover SUV that loves to get noticed.
The design of the new CX-30 2022
What you are about to read is by no means a sponsored article, and you will also notice it due to the defects that we are going to rattle off shortly.
However, we believe that the design of the new Mazda CX-30 2022 is truly one of a kind, capable of thrilling even the most distracted motorist. We are facing one hatchback with a raised trimalso ready to attack slightly uneven terrain and with all the advantages of a muscular chassis, with ample internal space (the trunk is 422 liters with the seats in place. 1,398 with the seats folded down). A perfectly recognizable car in an ocean of very similar models, which explodes inside in a riot of leather (at least in our version, it depends on the set-up and packages you choose) and obsessive attention to detail. On board you feel truly pampered and the feeling is that you are dealing with an absolutely premium product, robust and well built, ready to last for decades.
We have only a few small notes to do: externally the wide wheel arches in black plastic give it a “cross” look but perhaps lose in elegance (for some, however, it could be a “pro”), just as we would have preferred a wider set of rims among to choose during configuration.
If you are also fond of black rims, than on Soul Red Crystal of Mazda are divinely, you are practically forced to choose the version Homurarich and dynamic but with a few less elements than Exceed ed Exclusive (the latter was instead the configuration that ended up in our hands, the top of the range).
Looking at the bridge and central tunnel, the only notes we feel like making concern a still “hybrid” instrument panel and not entirely digital (although this is a detail that many may like) and a central screen for infotainment perhaps a little too sacrificed in size and position, placed inside a small “basin”.
It is a detail inherited from the previous generation Mazdas and which we hoped to have overcome in 2022, but obviously we will still have to wait. Among other things, they are completely absent the touch functions: we would have preferred a “hybrid” solution, touch + ring, but given the rear position of the display, the management of the entire infotainment on the central tunnel is still something you get used to quickly – and the shortcuts also work with the Smartphone Replication.
For everything else, elegance reigns supreme, at least going on the more expensive versions. With some additional compromises new Mazda CX-30 2022 can be had starting from the excellent price of 27,350 euros.
How does the new Mazda CX-30 2022 drive?
If there is another aspect of the Mazda that should be loved unconditionally, it is the driving dynamics: direct, clean, with no particular frills or modes to select. Just start the engine and leave, all you have to do is enjoy the journey in total tranquility and safety.
Il comfort aboard the CX-30 2022 is absolute: the soundproofing of the passenger compartment is exceptional, at times it almost seems (almost eh) to drive an electric car, moreover the Bose sound system has advanced functions to further eliminate hiss and disturbing external noises, so your journey will be free of distractions and elements of stress. The entire CX-30 project seems to invite you to meditate, to calm down, including its range of engines. If you are looking for a sporty and nervous car you are not in the right place, with Mazda you are embarking on a Zen journey made of calm and reduced fuel consumption. The range is full-bodied, ranging from 122 HP to 186 HP, all of them M Hybrid e-Skyactiv G and X petrol enginesavailable with front or all-wheel drive, with 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox.
We tested the 2.0 Mazda M Hybrid e-Skyactiv X with 186 HP / 137 kW all-wheel drive, the maximum we could ask for, and we found ourselves in our hands an engine devoted entirely to consumption, with a good cue on request (a low revs) but not shocking – perhaps also due to the AWD traction.
The road holding proved to be excellent in many situations, to have some real torque, however, you have to go to the lowest ratios. The strong point of this configuration, however, is the excellent fuel consumption: after hundreds of kilometers of city, suburban and a pinch of motorway our average consumption stopped at 6 liters of petrol per 100 kmin practice it is a car with a unique design, great sturdiness and maniacal finishing that consumes as much as a Dacia Duster with 1.0 engine (we tried the Dacia Duster Extreme 2022).
The entire range of engines stands at these levels, so in our opinion it is worthwhile to aim immediately high at the 186 HP, so as to still have a performing car in every situation, the 122 HP may not be enough in some circumstances or with the car loaded. of passengers and suitcases. If you are going to take advantage of the excellent suite of Autonomous Guide present on board don’t make the mistake of buying the 6-speed manual gearbox.
The manual gearbox obviously works beautifully, it is smooth and precise, but noticeably detracts from the Level 2 Autonomous Driving offered by Mazda.
The assistant for managing congested traffic is lost, moreover it is ridiculous that the car asks us to increase / downshift gear according to the traffic, the experience of Adaptive Cruise Control is seriously compromised. Buying the automatic gearbox instead is good and right, for elevate the capabilities of the new CX-30 2022 to their maximum. However, the effectiveness of the hybrid system has not been received: as it happened recently on the new Mazda2 2022 (driving the new Mazda2 2022), even with the CX-30 the hybrid system is almost invisible.
Mazda has also thought of a dedicated screen to display the advantages related to the M Hybrid technology, but we have not been able to obtain any significant data. The nice graphic indicating the trees that we would have saved in terms of CO2 saved by using the hybrid technology has unfortunately remained fixed on x0, we really hope that in the future Mazda will be able to invest more in this aspect.
The technology of the new Mazda CX-30 2022
As mentioned above, the automatic transmission is the perfect companion to the excellent suite of Mazda CX-30 Level 2 Autonomous Driving. It is a precise and feature-rich system that we have enjoyed in the past and that continues to improve over time.
The maintenance of the lane and the Adaptive Cruise Control with automatic adjustment of the safety distance and speed based on traffic are worth the price of the ticket alone, and the car independently reads the speed limits on the roadside and we just need to press a button on the multifunction steering wheel to adapt the governor or limiter limit. Another unmissable feature of the new Mazda CX-30 is the 360 degree top view, one of the best you can find on the market. The quality of the cameras is also quite high for the segment. On the other hand, if there is one aspect that Mazda needs to improve, it is certainly the on-board software. There has been some progress with the last few generations, but the base has remained the same as in recent years and in 2022 the gap with the competition begins to be felt.
The system itself has nothing wrong with it, it is just a little thin in its proposal and outdated in the user experience, fortunately, compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is guaranteed, even if we were unable to make the system work. Smartphone Replication wireless (on the Mazda2 2022 Apple CarPlay wireless worked without problems). In any case, you can connect the phone to the USB socket in the armrest case and forget about it while traveling, an excellent solution to not fall into temptation and take a look at the display from time to time.
On the technological front we also liked the classic Mazda head-up display. It is certainly a marginal option, but it is a new generation system that projects everything onto the windshield and can be convenient for finding the main driving functions – including autonomous driving functions and blind spot control. As the ‘hybrid’ instrument cluster is filled with digital and analogue elements, the head-up display can be great for concentrating only key information.
The new Mazda CX-30 2022 according to us
As a Mazda tradition, the CX-30 2022 also goes straight to the point. It is a car that does not get lost in trivial frills and goes straight to the substance, to give its user a solid driving experience and well-being.
The car gives back sensations of great sturdiness, is treated in every detail and is perfect both for everyday use and for family weekend outings. Its range of engines is not particularly aggressive, not even the top of the 186 HP range, but Mazda’s real target has been balance performance and consumption, hitting the target perfectly. With a mixed consumption of about 6 liters of petrol per 100 km, the CX-30 2022 consumes as much as the lower segment cars with the 1.0 engine, which is truly excellent. Its price list is also very versatile, we have different powers, FWD and AWD tractions, manual or automatic 6-speed gearbox. Of course we would have preferred a more pronounced hybrid technology and a renewed dashboard in appearance, but for this new generations will arrive. The Mazda CX-30 2022 confirms itself as a car for those who love to drive in total tranquility, surrounded by every comfort, but who nevertheless do not mind intense outdoor adventures, perhaps with AWD traction.
