You haven’t used your car for a long time and you don’t know if it will start when you ask it to. Or you have several cars (for enjoyment or collection) and you want to have one of them ready to go out with it. Or simply, the battery has said enough in the middle of the journey. In all these cases, a charger or starter is the best of our allies.
The more modern a car is, the more important it is take care of your electrical system to avoid breakdowns or false alarms at many critical points (from the lights to the ignition). Not in few occasions do we break our heads with inexplicable problems whose origin is really in the irregular tension that it produces A battery when it fails.
Current chargers are designed to be easy to handle. They are easily connected to the battery terminals (remember: first always the positive, then the negative) and are started by pressing just one or two buttons.
Of course, before getting down to it, it is always advisable check that the battery does not present cracks or liquid leaks or any other sign of deterioration. Also, if at any time during the load we perceive strange noisesbad odors or vapors, it is imperative to stop it immediately.
How to properly choose a battery charger
When choosing our charger or starter, we must take into account a few simple points:
- Compatibility. For several decades, car batteries have used a 12 V standard. Many chargers allow you to recharge, in addition to these batteries, those of other vehicles whose intensity may be higher or lower. This can come in handy if, in addition to a car, we have a motorcycle or another type of vehicle, saving us from having to acquire other, more specific chargers.
- cable length. In addition to thinking about the charger, we must think (if possible) about the space where we will leave the battery charging. For this reason, it is preferable that the cables of our charger are as long as possible, both the one that is plugged into the domestic current and those that connect to the terminals.
- tweezers size. Precisely, to guarantee that the connection of the charger with the battery is safe, it is advisable that the charger clamps are as large as possible. Likewise, it is preferable that they oppose a certain resistance when pressing to open them, since others that are too ‘soft’ can slip off the terminal and interrupt the charge.
