Tesla is not the only manufacturer developing an electric tractor cab for semi-trailers. Mercedes-Benz also outlines his eActros LongHaulwith battery, and which will be the flagship product of Mercedes-Benz Trucks at this year’s transport fair, which will be held in September in Hannover.

The manufacturer announced the 40-tonne truck in 2020 and is now presenting for the first time the new prototype closer to series production, which is scheduled for 2024. But before that, in 2023, pre-series prototypes will reach customers for real-world usage testing.

For example, truck drivers in the EU must take a minimum break of 45 minutes after a maximum of 4.5 hours of driving. During this time you can recharge the energy for the remaining route. The eActros LongHaul would thus be a suitable option when used regularly on routes that can be planned.

Finally, eActros LongHaul will be able to recharge its battery through the system “megawatt charging”. These are ultra-fast recharges that use a power of 1,000 kWabout three times higher than that of the most powerful charging points that currently exist on the market and that supply a power of up to 350 kW.

Thus, a more frequent ultra-fast recharge will make it possible to compensate for the limited autonomy of the batteries, as well as to contain or even reduce their size and weight to gain useful load. Ultra-fast charging points for road transport are even more essential than those for cars if you want to move goods by road with electric trucks.

Thus, the European Commission, within the framework of the plan “Fit for 55” (and which includes a ban on selling new cars with internal combustion engines) proposes an obligation for Member States to ensure the installation of charging points for electric trucks along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) of a power of 1,400 kW in 2025 and 3,500 kW in 2030, as well as in all the exclusive guarded parking lots for trucks on the TEN-T roads.

Also, Daimler Truck (Mercedes), Traton Group (a subsidiary of the Volkswagen group and which includes MAN y Scaniafor example) and Volvo Group have signed a binding agreement to establish a public recharging joint venture for long-distance transport.
