The DGT reminds that bicycles are fined if they do not respect the speed limits, inside and outside the city

Las bicycleslike the rest of the vehicles, have a specific speed limit on intercity highways that must comply. And likewise, in the city they must circulate to those established generically according to the type of road.

And it is that although it is about vulnerable users, and to whom regulations seek to protect through certain precepts that other vehicles must comply with towards them (for example when overtaking them), they also have obligations that if they do not comply, they can be translated into a more.

Speed limit for out of town cyclists

Cyclists riding in a group on conventional roads

Los cyclists can circulate outside the town both by conventional roads as for highway. Although on the highway they will not be able to do it if it is expressly prohibited. On the contrary, they are always prohibited from driving on the highway.

With this in hand, the maximum speed at which cyclists can circulate on these roads is 45 km / has established in Article 45 of the General Circulation Regulation:

Cycles, two- and three-wheeled mopeds and light quadricycles: 45 kilometers per hour. However, bicycle drivers may exceed said maximum speed in those sections in which the circumstances of the road allow a higher speed to be developed.

In other words, as a general rule on these roads they have to go at 45 km/h, although they are allowed to exceed this speed if the section allows it, which is left to the free interpretation of an agent. Although except in sections of descent, it is not usual for a cyclist to exceed this speed.

On the highway at less than 60 km/h? Although as a rule it is not possible to circulate normally below 60 km/h (since the generic limit is 120 km/h), bicycles can do so since the traffic regulations include them among the exceptions.

This is dictated by Article 21 of the traffic law As for speed limits:

It will be possible driving below the minimum speed limitsd in the cases cyclesanimal-drawn vehicles, transport and special vehicles, or when traffic circumstances prevent the maintenance of a speed higher than the minimum without risk to traffic, as well as in the cases of protection or accompaniment of other vehicles, in the terms that is determined by regulation.

For this reason, on the motorway they should always drive along the right shoulder (in the direction of the road), and also on conventional roads, unless you do not have it. In this case, drive as closely as possible to the right margin, using the essential part of the road to facilitate overtaking faster vehicles.

In addition, it must be taken into account that only if you are over 14 years old you can ride a bicycle on the highway. And if there is a specific cyclist path parallel to a highway or conventional road, it is forced to circulate on it.

And in the city?

The regulations stipulate that on urban roads, generic limits apply depending on the route and not of the vehicle, as it happens outside of town.

  • 20 km / h on roads that have single platform of road and sidewalk.
  • 30 km / h in the process of one lane in each direction traffic.
  • 50 km / h in the process of two or more lanes in each direction traffic.

And bicycles must abide by them. However, as in conventional or motorways, if there is a segregated lane for cyclists on urban roads, they are also obliged to circulate on it.

In addition, if you run in a group in the city, you can circulate in a column of two at most. And in case there is a lot of traffic or visibility is reduced, you have to circulate in a row one by one. Minors must wear a helmet, being only recommended for other users.

Speed penalties in the case of a cyclist are the same as for other drivers, being exponential as long as the speed limit is exceeded fixed on the road.

For example, if the road is limited to 20 km/h, in the case of single-platform urban roads, and circulates at 30 km/h, the fine will be 100 euros.

And if you do it at more than 40 km/h on this type of road, the penalty will be 300 euros. In this case, two points are subtracted from the card, but since a permit is not required to ride a bicycle, only the economic penalty will be applied.

In addition, if a cyclist exceeds 45 km/h outside the city, they will also be sanctioned, although as it is allowed in certain sections, it will depend on the conditions at the time and what the agent interprets.
